Not next year, but the year after the next one, the 12th edition of the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) will be held in Toronto.
On Wednesday the members of the IIFA advisory board announced that IIFA 2011 will be held in greater Toronto from June 16-19. With the announcement, Toronto becomes the first North American city to host the glittering ceremony, which is held in a different world city each year.
The International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) is normally a four day event comprising of a film festival, forums, conferences, fashion shows and, of course, the award function.
Amitabh Bachchan, the IIFA brand ambassador, wasn’t present at the announcement but Bollywood stars like Vivek Oberoi, Celina Jaitely and director-producer Ramesh Sippy joined the Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty who said in a statement said he was "thrilled" with the decision of the IIFA.
“With so many film buffs living in Ontario, Indian film stars and executives will feel right at home,” McGuinty said.
Mr. Bachchan also sent a message in which he said that he was “extremely excited that the North American premiere of the IIFA weekend of 2011 will be held in Ontario.”
